This Day in History: “We Are the World” Recording Brings Artists Together for a Cause

On January 28, 1985, 45 legendary musicians recorded the iconic charity single, “We Are the World” at A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood. Over 20 million copies of the single were sold, raising over $60 million (equivalent to $130 million today) for humanitarian aid in Africa (90%) and homeless initiatives in the US (10%)

The single was written (as well as performed) by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones. Other notable participants included Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Willie Nelson, and Paul Simon.
