Convertri Updates – 05/03/19

Pictures are overrated.

I’m possibly a little biased, having made a livelihood out of rearranging 26 letters of the alphabet day in, day out, but I think words are probably even more important.

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, and maybe so if you’re describing every little tree or winding path or weird-faced cat in a medieval painting…

But a good writer barely needs a tenth of that to leave you with enough of an impression to evoke the majesty, emotion and sheer “huh”-ness of a good painting while letting your imagination fill the gaps.

For example:

“Sunflowers, resplendent in the midday sunshine, coarse brush strokes hinting at liveliness and movement.”

(Sunflowers, by Van Gogh)

“White hands folded in her lap and dark hair tumbling about her shoulders, her smile hides a mother’s secret.”

(Mona Lisa, by Leonardo Da Vinci)

“Cherub butt.”

(Everything, by everyone from 1420 to 1902)

There, I just saved you £6.50 for museum entry.

(But seriously, folks, support your local heritage sites. They really, really need it.)

This week, the words are what matter as we’ve made wide-ranging improvements to fonts and text elements that will make getting your message across faster, easier and more beautiful.

To take a look at the updates (and don’t forget to visit the gift shop on your way out), press CTRL+SHIFT+R – or CMD+SHIFT+R if you’re on a Mac:

FEATURES

Mobile Fonts – we’ve changed up our font loading strategy on mobile pages. Now, instead of seeing a blank space on your pages while your Google Fonts load, visitors will instantly see your text in the default font family before it changes to your font of choice. This means visitors will be able to read your text earlier, which gets across your sales message faster, which means more sales. After your Google Font has loaded – and that takes a miniscule amount of time anyway – your text will look exactly how you set it up in the Page Builder. As an added bonus, the PageSpeed Insights score of your pages should increase as they now reward pages with smart font display strategies. Winning!

Page templates [PRO] –
Guess what this week’s template is called? Words. And it looks so good, it’s worth a thousand pictures.

BUGS

Android – two weeks ago, we released a tweak for Android’s system-level font size settings to stop it breaking text on Convertri pages when viewed in the Facebook in-app browser. Turns out, the tweak was incomplete, and you may have noticed the fix wasn’t working in certain modes. We’ve now made your pages display correctly in tablet and phone mode, landscape and portrait. Please republish your pages to apply this fix.

Internal Links – mobile Chrome was having an issue with internal links. First click worked perfectly, in that it scrolled to the link target, but if the visitor moved back to the link and clicked it again, nothing happened. Now you can click, scroll back, click, etc. until Armageddon, or at least until the end of your phone battery life. You know, if that’s your idea of fun.

Text Cursor – at some point in history, we broke the cursor on Text elements in the Mobile view of the Page Builder. When your mouse was over a Text element in Mobile view, you’d see the “move” cursor. That was super misleading if you wanted to select text to customize its mobile font scale, so we set to the “text”/”select” cursor to make things clearer.

DNS Records – our “Edit DNS Record” dialog was treating any custom CNAME records as CONVERTRI record, therefore making it impossible to edit it. You had to delete your CNAME record and re-add it to change its value. Now you can freely edit your custom CNAME records.

Happy converting!
