Convertri Updates – 29/09/20

If you’ve been reading these emails for a while, you know that if the devs don’t squash any bugs that week I like to report an interesting fact about insects instead.

But did you know, that’s not just a hilarious play on words?

In 1944, Grace Hopper discovered arguably the world’s first computer bug. While she was working on the Mark II and Mark III in Harvard’s Computation Laboratory, she and other operators traced an error in the Mark II to a moth trapped in a relay.

The first ever computer bug was carefully removed, and taped into the log book for posterity.

But if you apply the chicken-and-egg scenario to computer mechanics, you may be surprised – bugs actually predate computers by over 70 years. “Bug” has been an engineering term used in mechanical manufacturing since the 1870’s, as it originates from the Old English word “bugge” meaning “monster”.

All this suggests our forebears were aware of the existence of physical gremlins in our machines: the existence of which is arguably more scary than a moth being drawn to a blinking light.

Luckily, we’re well aware of the existence of bugs here at Convertri. No one’s ever been Shatner-ed into ignoring a gremlin on the wing of our proverbial plane.

That’s why when we see a bug, we stomp it out.

(If logbooks were still a thing, rest assured they’d be bursting with li’l squished bodies.)

This week, we’ve solved a bug that’s been annoying quite a lot of our users for weeks. To experience this update, and many more, hit CTRL+SHIFT+R (or CMD+SHIFT+R if you’re on a Mac to check out  what’s new this week.
